Foods we weren’t meant to eat!

Tips on how to beat cancer, from 100-year-old farmer Percy Weston

We were not designed for this! These bodies we live in were Not designed for foods saturated with preservatives, antibiotics, artificial flavours, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and hormones, the doctor warned.

Nor were our bodies designed for foods with an altered molecular structure—- foods ruined by irradiation, microwave cooking, deep frying or scalding high temperatures (over cooked), according to David A Darbro MD. He wrote this in his foreword to a “commonsense guide for eliminating sickness through nutrition” a decade ago. Sixty years earlier a well-read farmer named Percy George Weston had a similar line of thought. A keen-eyed, diminutive dynamo who rarely became sick, found at the age of 31, in the prime of life, he was burnt out and drained of energy. His doctor diagnosed anemia.

Weston wondered if the typical Australian diet was to blame, perhaps lacking in certain mineral elements. Investigation revealed the pattern. His staple foods-such as porridge, bacon and eggs, meats, bread, beans, macaroni, pork, white rice, potatoes and tomatoes-contained a greater abundance of acid minerals such as phosphorus and chlorine than alkaline minerals such as calcium, potassium and magnesium. Was this constant diet making his body too acid to function properly? He suspected his growing the vegetables in a field that he regularly fertilized with superphosphate (to please Virginian leaf tobacco buyers), had made matters worse. He knew from his field experiments that “constant use of super-soluble phosphatic fertilizers could skew the take-up of minerals and trace elements in food crops, producing mineral-poor foods,” as he was to write in his book Cancer: Cause & Cure. Nature’s Secret Exposed (Bookbin) first published in 2001.

Percy Weston made a full and rapid recovery by switching to a set of foods with abundant alkaline minerals, including fruits and vegetables from his father’s organic orchard. He became convinced of the need to formulate a cellular dietary supplement to neutralise acids in the body and to correct mineral imbalances in the food chain.

The Spur to its development came with a bout of arthritis in his forties, when he was able to put his studies of crop nutrition and observation of mineral preferences of sheep to good advantage. A largely vegetarian diet and the new mineral supplement worked wonders. It was the beginning. The fine-tuning of the formula was to take decades.

Concerns about health drove him on, especially important after World War 2 when agricultural chemicals flooded on to the market and he was advised by “experts” to use them.

Yet when he did so, he had problems with insect infestation and animal mortality. For the district as a whole, the cancer rate was rising. Finally he came down with cancer himself. Self-reliance was the name of the game as he had few financial resources and felt he could no longer trust the scientific community and doctors, whose advice so often turned out to be wrong.

He cured himself with diet and the mineral powder.

As the fame of his Diet and Mineral supplement for humans spread, especially after dramatic recoveries from cancer of family and friends, documented in the book – Cancer Cause & Cure, he became very busy on his sheep and walnut farm at Eurobin, Victoria, Australia, opposite Mt Buffalo National Park. Hundreds of entries in his visitors’ book are testimony to this. They came to buy Percy’s mineral powder and they listened to his advice as one who speaks with authority on the subject.

Three years into the 21st Century, centenarian Percy, as few others could look back to a time when commercially grown fruits and vegetables possessed home grown qualities of distinct flavour and freshness. There were more varieties and flavours of apples available before the era of atomic weapon testing and the ages of mass production. Farmers had fewer problems with insects before chemists unleashed potent pesticides that killed both prey and predator and the chemical companies upset the biological balance of the soil web with new super-soluble fertilizers. Grazing animals thrived on natural pastures in good country that was not over-stocked and thereby not quickly depleted of trace minerals. Most of Percy’s father’s generation led active lives into their 70s and well beyond without succumbing to cancer, arthritis, diabetes, obesity and many other “modern” metabolic and degenerative diseases.

Percy’s advice is, we eat “living food”, i.e. organic food, preferably, freshly picked. You can tell the difference. High-quality produce gives you energy and you need less of it to feel replete. It is rich in minerals and will not readily rot. It will only dehydrate. Percy Weston saw from nature what man was doing wrong and provided a practical and affordable way to check disease and maintain wellness. He grew most of his food in good soil by organic methods and supplemented with sprinklings of his mineral formula that ionizes in water (Percy’s Powder®), or better still, the powder stirred into a glass of cold water with juice of half a lemon. Book Review: Cancer Cause and Cure: A 20th Century Perspective written by Percy Weston reviewed by Abby Eagle

Percy Weston, an Australian farmer, chronicles his experience with high-phosphate fertilizers and its effects on the health of humans, farm animals and crops. He shows how chemical farming leads to degenerative disease, and how by eating organic foods with the correct mineral balance it can be reversed. His story is fascinating, especially since he was born in 1903 and died peacefully in his sleep at 101.

As a small boy, Weston suffered partial paralysis after inhaling the fumes from a phosphorous-impregnated match and later he experienced headache and nausea after inhaling the phosphorous fumes from rabbit bait. He also noticed that the rabbits became paralyzed before dying. Smoking Virginia leaf tobacco, grown with super phosphate to produce high yields, made him feel weak and giddy for hours whereas smoking standard brown leaf tobacco, which is grown without super phosphate, gave no ill effects.

Weston observed a student in a science class accidentally inhale phosphorous gas and within seconds collapse on the floor. In another school science incident a student carried a piece of flaming phosphorous around the class room. Within minutes most students were struggling on the floor and 17 were admitted to hospital. Workers in factories that made wax matches died from a disease known as phossey jaw which was linked to exposure to white phosphorous.

Super-phosphate is a chemical fertilizer produced by the action of sulphuric acid on phosphate rock, making the phosphorous more soluble for faster release. As a farmer, Weston began to attribute many problems to the use of super-phosphate. During a mouse plague on the wheat fields in 1932, Weston discovered many had cancer lesions on the ears, nose, tail and feet. A decade later he saw the same types of cancers in a plague of rats.

By 1930 the soils in Victoria, Australia were saturated with phosphorus and newspapers carried their first reports that cigarettes were to blame for lung cancer. Other adverse effects of the heavy application of super-phosphate was a marked increase in insect activity; tobacco became stunted and suffered from mosaic virus and bunchy top, two diseases where the cell multiplication of the plant goes haywire (as in cancer); and gorgon-headed tomatoes and potatoes also began appearing.

In mid-1937, he observed a neighbor applying a 4 gallon tin of super to the family vegetable garden. A year later both boys in the family suffered polio (infantile paralysis) and one died. Weston notes that this was just one case amongst many in his farming community. Sheep and cows on pasture fertilized with super-phosphate also suffered from cancer and disease. He observed that some sheep would rather starve than eat pasture fertilized with high levels of super-phosphate, and those that did eat it either became ill or died.

Weston believes that a contributing factor to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) may be a diet high in phosphorous. Either the mother’s breast milk could be high in phosphorous, if the mother eats phosphorous-rich foods, or if bottle fed, the baby could get too much phosphorous from cow’s milk that has super-phosphate in the food chain.

One theme runs throughout the book: the theory that high levels of phosphorous may cause paralysis in one form or another–a paralysis of the immature breathing system of the baby as in SIDS, infantile paralysis (polio) in children, and a paralysis of the breathing system in children and adults as in asthma. Weston notes that cows die from bloat when they are unable to burp out the gas, once again a paralysis of the breathing system.

New rains, on soils recently fertilised with super-phosphate, cause a flood of phosphates to be taken up by the plants and into the milk and food supply, which can then contribute to an outbreak of disease. Weston claims that phosphorous can stimulate germ activity and that this is a contributing factor in the outbreaks of mastitis, three-day fever and milk fever in dairy herds.

Weston condemns pasteurization along with the use of super-phosphate. He and his family all thrived on fresh raw milk from pasture-fed cows for 60 years, often with no refrigeration. In over 30 years of feeding raw cows milk to orphaned lambs on his farm, there were few to no fatalities. However, when he was unable to procure raw milk, 29 out of a group of 30 lambs died when fed commercial pasteurised milk. Weston shows that there is a similarity between lamb deaths and the death of babies (SIDS) in the era of pasteurised milk and the use of super-phosphate.

Weston points out that the correct phosphorous and calcium balance in the soil is essential for the correct proportions to be in the food that we and the farm animals eat. (It is interesting to note that a high phosphorous-to-calcium ratio has been cited as one reason why the calcium in non-organic milk is not available to the body.)

Weston was able to heal his own cancer on two occasions by avoiding foods that had super-phosphate and organophosphate pesticides in the food chain, and by supplementing with a formula of mineral salts that included sodium bicarbonate, magnesium sulphate, potassium sulphate, iron sulphate and potassium iodide.

The book contains a comprehensive appendix of tables and graphs that presents a convincing correlation between the use of phosphates with cancers in cattle and humans over the last century. It is a must read for anyone who has cancer, and for anyone who has any doubts about the reason for eating organic food.

Percy Weston [2003 – 2004], author of Cancer: Cause & Cure

Percy Weston, an Australian farmer, in his book Cancer: Cause & Cure relates his experiences with phosphorous and super-phosphate fertilisers. At the age of six he became ill as a result of inhaling the fumes from phosphorous impregnated matchheads (this is before the days of safety matches). He had unpleasant experiences with phosphorous impregnated rabbit baits on the farm. He saw a school friend collapse in a science laboratory when an experiment involving phosphorous went wrong. These were separate and seemingly unrelated experiences; only later did he realise that phosphorous had been involved on each occasion.

Later, as a farmer, Weston – in common with others in his district – became involved in growing tobacco. This involved administering very heavy applications of super-phosphate fertiliser, at rates as high as a thousand pounds per acre. Subsequently, Weston noticed problems with his sheep – an arthritic condition affecting their knees and cancerous lesions on their ears.

When he moved the sheep onto pasture which had not been treated with super-phosphate, the sheep recovered. Weston moved some of the sheep back onto the treated paddock and they developed the same problems again. He moved them off it and they recovered. The pattern was undeniable.

Later again, Weston himself was afflicted with arthritis and a cancerous tumour which developed on his hand. Remembering his early life experiences and realising that phosphorous had been involved, and recalling his experiences with the sheep, Weston wondered whether reducing his own intake of phosphorous would have any effect. Like Hafer, he set about developing a low phosphate diet. He also experimented – as he had earlier with his sheep using mineral licks – with supplements of alkaline minerals such as magnesium and potassium, which he believed would counteract the harmful effects of phosphorous. The results exceeded his expectations: the arthritis eased and gradually disappeared; the cancer tumour dried up and broke away from his hand.

Weston has continued his experiments with his low phosphate diet for several decades. He is convinced that exposure to and consumption of phosphorous/phosphate can cause very serious health problems. Later still, he experienced adverse effects again as a result of the indiscriminate use of organo-phosphate sprays in his district. At this point, it is interesting to note that Agent Orange, used in the Vietnam War, was also an organo-phosphate herbicide.

Weston’s book is an outstanding read, full of fascinating detail about his experiments and experiences. It is indeed striking that Weston and Hafer, two investigators working at opposite ends of the earth from one another, have reached similar conclusions about the dangers of the high intake of phosphorous/phosphate. Both have achieved remarkable results in implementing the low-phosphate diet.
